Abstract

The article focuses on Robert Monroe, a retiree from the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, who enrolled at Prince George's Community College at age 62 and, at age 70, is close to receiving his second associate's degree, in criminal justice. It discusses his study habits, which are methodical. His motivation for taking the courses, it says, is that it is something constructive to do which gives his life structure and direction. It discusses his role in his classes, which is mostly as a student but occasionally as a counselor to his much younger classmates about planning ahead or quieting down so that the class can proceed in an orderly manner.
