Abstract

The article presents an exploration into the philosophy of music, particularly focusing on the existence and determination of an ontology of music. The author asserts that a pragmatic methodological approach ought to be used rather than a semantic or modal system when defining what is music. The flaws of semantic and modal definitions are highlighted. The existence of multiple systems of ontologies is discussed, pointing out the diversity of interpretation which is possible within musical aesthetics. The author points out that the multiplicity of theories is not necessarily a challenge requiring resolution.
