Measurements of height, weight and calculation of height velocity are highly accurate and sensitive to changes in a child's health. Actual definition of normal linear growth is based on height velocity and it is not acceptable to label a child as short purely on the basis of a biochemical test. As a result, auxological assessment is the "gold standard" method for tracking any abnormal achievements in terms of development. The aim of this article is to underline the major importance of the GPs (general practitioners) in the early diagnosis of any abnormal height and weight achievements, due to the implementation of the auxological growth assessment in their everyday clinical practice.
