Abstract
- This article explores the role of the sermon and manhood in the book "Paradise" by Toni Morrison. The author reflects on the literary depiction of black patriarchs imitating the racist, oppressive, and exclusionary ideologies of white society. It is suggested that African American manhood in the novel is based on discourses of American patriotism, black nationalism, and the activities of soldiering and hunting. Other topics include the domination and demonization of women, mercy and forgiveness for murderers, and the sermons of preacher Jonathan Edwards.
