Abstract

It has been affirmed that Choderlos de Laclos's Les liaisons dangereuses (1782) was not published in Spanish until 1822. Yet a rare (mutilated) translation, titled La Presidenta de Turvel, appeared in 1799 and was announced repeatedly in various newspapers. This article studies the drastic pruning that the translator (most likely Benito Riveira, the name of the individual who sought permission to publish the work) undertook. Even with the pruning the novel would have had serious problems getting by the censors had it not fallen into the hands of a lazy or indifferent evaluator (don Andrés Navarro) who gave his permission to publish it.
