Abstract
- The present research is focused on the performance evaluation of the nursing professional (Portugal). The goal is to identify the perceptions of raters and ratees with regards to the performance evaluation system, in order to have a more efficient and effective nursing appraisal system. The research design was in a survey format and was applied to 97 raters and ratees of a hospital (Portuguese region called Alto Alentejo). Results show agreement and satisfaction towards the existence of a performance evaluation system, as well as the legislated aspects. In a general sense the perception of the raters, with regard to a more efficient and effective system, must include management by objectives and the social validation of the final rate. On the other hand, the ratees prefer a closer monitoring process (critical incidents), management by objectives, and better interactional procedures.
