Abstract

The article focuses on the epidemiology and screening of lung cancer. Lung cancer is said to be the 10th leading cause of death globally, but it is expected to move to a higher place as its prevalence increases in developing countries. Active cigarette smoking is considered as the main cause of lung cancers. Other causes include secondhand cigarette smoke, pipe smoking, occupational exposure and air pollution. The relevance of screening to reduce mortality from lung cancer is explained, along with an overview of studies related to lung cancer screening. The efficacy of low radiation dose computed tomography in detecting early lung cancer in asymptomatic patients is also noted.
