Abstract

The article discusses the 21st century skills movement in education as depending on curriculum, teacher quality and assessment of children. It notes that the skills, critical thinking, problem solving, information literacy and understanding different kinds of knowledge, are not new, but the extent to which they are critical is new. It states that the distribution of effective schools and effective teachers can no longer be left to chance but must be managed. It emphasizes that skills and knowledge must not be thought of as separate entities but as intertwined, that teachers need to understand the importance of skills as well as content, and that tests need to be designed to measure thinking skills as well as content knowledge.
