Abstract

The Locrian Chamber Players, founded in 1994 by the composers David Macdonald and John Kreckler, have a number of rules that guide their programming and the way they present themselves. First, they perform no music that is more than a decade old. They have also refused to become partisans for specific compositional styles. And they insist that music is best experienced without a lot of baggage, which in their view includes program notes. Letting the music speak for itself is nice. Giving the audience some information about it is nicer. But maybe the Locrian players have a point. Nowadays most composers have their own Internet sites, with biographies, works lists and other information. And quite a few listeners at the group's concert on Thursday evening at Riverside Church had the Internet in their pockets, by way of smart phones. If an ensemble won't provide notes, you find your own, between pieces. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]
