Abstract

The article discusses magnetic fields in the universe, the large amount of energy they contain, and why magnetic fields explode to release energy. Examples of such explosions include storms on earth and solar flares. It explains the physics of exploding magnetic fields and the complications they can cause on earth and in space for astronauts and their missions. It discusses magnetic reconnection, its history, aspects that are not understood, and research involving computer simulation, experimentation, remote sensing, and measurements in space, including the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration's Magnetospheric Multiscale mission..
