Abstract

An encyclopedia entry for "Prolactin" is presented. It refers to a lactogenic polypeptide hormone secreted by the anterior pituitary under dopaminergic control from the hypothalamus. Serum prolactin levels, considered a peripheral marker of hypothalamic neurotransmitter activity, may potentially rise after epileptic seizures involving the hypothalamic region. These levels may also rise after repetitive seizures.
