Abstract

An encyclopedia entry for "Nystagmus" is presented. It offers clinical information on nystagmus in relation to epilepsy. Bidirectional nystagmus is said to be the most common result of interictal elevations of antiepileptic drugs (AED) and is an observable neurologic sign of AED toxicity. Nystagmus may also occur as an ictal manifestation in patients with seizures. Epileptic nystagmus is believed to be influenced by the activation of frontal eye fields that control saccades and pursuit movements.
