Abstract: An encyclopedia entry for the term "encephalopathy" is presented. The term refers to any diffuse cerebral dysfunction. This entry relates the disorder to the systemic effects of toxic-metabolic, hypoxic (anoxic), degenerative, infectious, inflammatory, or neoplastic causation. It notes that progressive or static encephalopathies may cause epilepsy.
