Abstract: An encyclopedia entry for the term "symptomatic generalized epilepsies" is presented. The term refers to a distinct classification of a number of epilepsy syndromes associated with diffuse structural injury of the brain. The entry identifies the West and Lennox-Gastaut syndromes among the notable symptomatic generalized epilepsies. It also notes the presence of secondarily generalized seizures among patients with symptomatic generalized epilepsies.
