Abstract

In this study, the removal and chemical forms of heavy metals were investigated by applying different currents (10, 20 and 30 mA) in electrokinetic remediation. The chemical forms of heavy metals were determined by sequential chemical extraction. While the chemical forms of Cr, Pb and Zn were available in mobility phase near the anode, the immobility phase which means precipitated and adsorbed forms were determined near the cathode. However, the variation in the chemical forms of three metals was clearly recognized at 20 mA application. The best removal rate of 18 % for Cr was achieved with the application of 10 mA while the application of 20 mA supplied the the highest rate of 14 % for Pb and 22 % for Zn. It was shown that a current higher relatively than 20 mA did not increase the efficiency of electrokinetic remediation because 30 mA current caused the lowest removals for even three metals. The efficiency of electrokinetic removal must be promoted with chemical preconditioning. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
