Some vintners are reintroducing the older native grape varietals which were mostly wiped out in the phylloxera epidemic of the mid-19th century which almost destroyed the industry. The vintners hope that establishing such varietals will make their wines more distinctive in the increasingly strong competition in the international wine market.
