Abstract
- The Baracoa-Yamanigüey coastline zone is characterized by high geologic and tectonic complexity. Active seismicity is reflected by the still on-going deformation on this part of Cuba as witnessed by recent neotectonic movements and geomorphologic features. The present work is based on the application of geomorphologic methods and photo interpretation, that includes profiles and Digital Elevation Model analysis based on topographic maps. The mapping and testing field work has been carried out using topographic maps and high-resolution orthorectified satellites data in order to understand the major variations in morphology. Morphological analysis, drainage network and topography, reveal important details of the landscape structures as well as the recent tectonic movements. The quantitative analysis of the drainage system, topographic and river profiles was also carried out. We identified and characterized four morphological lineaments systems in this zone. The principal directions of the lineaments systems are NE-SW, NNW-SE, N-S and E-W. These systems are related with tectonic structures generated by geotectonical evolution of the Eastern part of Cuba (Orient block). The geomorphologic features and pattern drainage indicate the oscillating uplift of the Baracoa-Yamanigüey coastal zone. This zone is marked by the development of peneplains, coral reef terraces and anomalous position of the fluvial deposits. This analysis shows the recent neotectonic movements in the Baracoa-Yamaniguey coastal zone. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
