Abstract

For the second time in four months, prison guards foiled an attempt to smuggle a cellphone into a prison by carrier pigeon, the authorities said Friday. A pigeon wearing a makeshift backpack was intercepted just outside the walls of the Danilo Pinheiro prison near the city of Sorocaba, according to the Sao Paulo State Prison Affairs Department. Inside the cloth sack were a cellphone and a paper with the name of an inmate waiting for the phone. In March, guards at the same prison spotted a pigeon resting on a wire with a cloth bag tied to one leg. They lured the bird down with food and discovered components of a cellphone in the bag. And in May, the police foiled a plot to smuggle cellphones into another Brazilian prison using a remotely controlled model helicopter. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]
