Investigates the growth of copper dioxide islands during the initial oxidation stage of copper with in situ transmission electron microscopy. Dominance of surface diffusion of oxygen in the growth of the three-dimensional islands; Contribution of a mechanism to the metal oxide growth; Importance of surface conditions in oxidation.
