Abstract: Reports on hominin fossils discovered west of Lake Turkana, Kenya in 2001, which differ markedly from other, contemporary hominin fossils. Belief that early hominin phylogeny is best represented by Australopithecus afarensis; Description of the new fossil, which is assigned a genus of hominin and points to an early diet-driven adaptive radiation.
