Abstract
- Objective: To evaluate clinical features and develop a scale, that allows predict a serious bacterial infection in febrile infants without apparent focus. Patients and methods: Cross-sectional study with 269 infants. The data were analyzed statistically evaluating partnerships and using regression for the multivariate analyis. It set a level of significance with p<0.05. The models were constructed validated. Results: 34.20% had severe bacterial infection. The models built for urinary tract infection and other severe bacterial infection were good predictors. The performance of the new scale was higher than that young infant observation scale (YIOS). The urinary tract infection (51.2%), sepsis (14.1%), and sepsis associated with meningitis (11.95%) were the most frequent presentation. Escherichia coli and Streptococcus group B were the main agents associated. Conclusions: These new scales are useful for treating febrile infants, surpassing the young infant observation scale.
