Abstract

The title of this work paraphrases Freud's Civilization and its Discontents (1930) (1) in reference to a feature of the Argentine educational system. We use the term "Culture" in the Freudian regulatory sense, i.e., as a set of restrictive norms for the human drives. In the social imaginary, the school embodies the culture however, we find that the teacher once a representative pillar is missing its legitimacy. What used to be unquestionable is now appealed by society. The teacher is annoyed with the system, shaken by several aspects that range from its working conditions to its knowledge. This work analyzes the teacher's subjectivity in the current educational system regarding the undergone transformations of its task: the society imposes values and a frantic pace turning the former vocation into a job that regards the teacher as an object. We pose the uprising of a teacher as the wish subject through reformulating some of the old school standards and trying to build or find out its vocation within a new meaning demanding context.
