Abstract
- Reports that, as of February, 2001, satellite measurements suggest that the Pine Island Glacier is thinning. How the glacier, located on the West Antarctic Ice Sheet, rests on bedrock that slopes toward the continent; Concern that changes in the glacier's ice shelf may increase the amount of ice that drains from the interior of Antarctica and floats out to sea; Speculation that if the current ice shelf disappears, the speed of the glacier would increase.
