Abstract

Malnutrition, a frequent complication of malignancies, is related to an imbalance between mildly increased calorific needs and frequently decreased intake (upper digestive tract obstruction, anorexia, etc.). Anorexia and cachexia pathophysiologies are better known. They are mainly related to a significant production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and sometimes directly related to tumoral messengers stimulating proteolysis and lipolysis. All these pathophysiological mechanisms are as many potential therapeutic targets currently under study. Targeted anti-cancer treatment associated with early targeted treatment of cancer cachexia could be the most effective way of preventing or limiting cancer-related malnutrition.
