Abstract

The article reports on the impact on the currency markets of the perceived willingness of U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner to entertain a Chinese proposal that an international currency supplant the U.S. dollar as the premier global reserve currency. In his remarks at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York, Geithner said he welcomes the idea of a larger global-finance role for Special Drawing Rights. It cites that the euro rose by 1% against the dollar following the remarks, and the dollar fell against the Japanese yen.
