Abstract

The populational behaviour of the main phytophagous insects on the varieties of black bean (Bat-304) and Cuba Cueto 25-9 (black bean) in monoculture and intercropping with maize was evaluated. The experiment was carried out from January to March 2001 in the agricultural areas of the National Center for Animal and Plant Health belonging to San José de las Lajas. The treatment comprised two varieties of beans in monoculture and intercropping with maize. Evaluations of insects occurred weekly and began 15 days post-germinating of bean. Phytophagous insects were counted and identified at the Entomology Laboratory belonging to the Agricultural Pest Group. Empoasca kraemeri Ross and More; Bemisia spp. and a complex of thysanopteran were found and their populations were higher in monoculture than in intercropping with maize. Thysanopteran complex showed preference for the variety Cuba Cueto 25-9 (black bean) and its populations were significantly higher with regard to the variety Bat-304. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
