Abstract: The article discusses the making of the motion picture "Duplicity," written and directed by Tony Gilroy and starring Clive Owen and Julia Roberts. The filming of one scene is discussed as is the editing of the scene later in the production process. Gilroy's other films include "Michael Clayton," which is indicative of the kinds of thrillers that he likes to make. Gilroy discusses the techniques that are available to surprise the audience, thereby making thrillers successful.
