Abstract

In the Camagüey province, the soils with flat and lightly wavy relief prevail, with slopes smaller than 5%, those that are cultivated leaving it without vegetation suffering the erosive processes periodically. This favorable the washout of fertile land with loss of bases, diminution of pH and of the productive capacity. This work tries to give to know the influence of vegetable cover on the pH and the consequent agricultural aptitude of the soils. This study was carried out in two parcels of runoffs located on a Brown Sialític soil; one of them lacking vegetation and another cover firstly with natural vegetation, and later on with the pumpkin, bean caupí, association pumpkin-peanut, peanut and sweet potato cultivations. The gradual decrease of the bases, through the time, when ha remained without vegetation was proven. In the covered parcel, during the rainy period, the concentration of bases has maintained with slight tendency to increase. The pH diminished through the time in the parcel without vegetation, passing the soil of the category of fairly sour to acid what affects the solubility of most of the nutrients and with it the agricultural aptitude of the soil. It confirms that soils with flat to wavy relief (slope < 5 %) are susceptible to the erosive processes and the vegetable cover contributes to diminish the acidity of the soil and to create favorable conditions for the agricultural sustenance.
