Abstract

The article discusses the reaction of college administrators to U.S. President Barack Obama's goal to ensure the U.S. has the highest proportionate college graduation rate in the world by the year 2020. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, a charitable organization which has donated funds to increase the number of college graduates, has estimated that Obama's goal may take five years longer than he has suggested. The Lumina Foundation for Education, an educational organization, has issued a report suggesting how the government can align educational programs to reflect job market needs. The authors comment on the use of data from the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development to measure graduation rates.
