Abstract

The article reports that the new poverty line of 1,067 renminbi (RMB) a year in China as defined in 2009 by the government has raised the country's impoverished population to 43.2 million. Earlier calculations by the government which are based on a yearly income RMB786 showed a figure of 14.97 million living at below subsistence level. It is also noted that China's new poverty threshold is well below the international poverty line of U.S. $1 a day.
