Abstract

The article focuses on Haiti. The country has had a United Nations peacekeeping force in place since 2004, which has led to a significant reduction of political violence. Huge economic and social problems remain. Haiti is the poorest country in the Western hemisphere, and its economy has been damaged by the global recession and hurricanes which left widespread damage. Its government remains largely dysfunctional.
