Abstract

The article discusses the diplomacy of Toussaint Louverture. It examines the roles of Louverture in the Haitian Revolution, on how he attained Haitian independence, as governor of Saint Domingue, and how he sought freedom for slaves. It notes that Louverture was a diplomat who was once a planter and a politician. It analyzes the diplomacy of Louverture based on his foreign policy as a political figure, on his willingness to accept policies at odds with his abolitionist rhetoric, and on his personal desires. It cites the implications created by his foreign policy and collaboration efforts with countries such as France, United States and Great Britain in creating alliances.
