Abstract

This article presents information about the sawfish and threats to its existence. Sawfish are found in tropical and subtropical waters and are rarely seen in U.S. waters except for the Florida Everglades where they live in the protective mangroves that thrive there. Sawfish have been endangered by those who hunt them for their rostrum teeth. The rostrum is the saw-shaped bill that the fish use to slash at schools of fish for food. Hunters use the teeth to make spurs worn by roosters in cockfights. Sawfish were declared off-limits for international commerce in 2007.
