Abstract

The article presents information on the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and the history of economic relations between Mexico and the United States. Details are given outlining the political events and movements immediately surrounding the establishment of NAFTA in 1994, highlighting both its challenges and accomplishments. Further discussion is given overviewing similar trends in U.S.-Mexican relations since the 1820s, especially in the agricultural sector. Commentary is particularly given regarding the indistinct nature of the cultural and economic border between the two nations. Suggestions are offered asserting that while economic progress has been made as a result of NAFTA, multiple historical trends of setbacks still exist.
