Abstract

The article presents a medical study which examined the effect of a theoretical strategy of universal voluntary HIV testing and immediate treatment with antiretroviral therapy (ART) for elimination of HIV. Mathematical models were used to explore the effect on the case reproduction number and the long-term dynamics of the HIV epidemic. Data from South Africa was used as the test case for a generalised epidemic. All HIV transmission was assumed to be heterosexual. Researchers concluded that universal voluntary HIV testing and immediate ART with present prevention approaches could have a major effect on severe generalised HIV/AIDS epidemics.
