Abstract

This paper studies the gender differences in associated meanings, attitudes and behavior in a sample of 395 students, using a self-report questionnaire. The data are analyzed by cluster analysis, factor analysis, Student t, Mann-Whitney's U and chi-square. In both genders we find a positive image of sexuality, bound to a discourse typical of sexual education. Women given more value to sexuality within the couple's relationship and to sexual abstinence. With respect to the associated meaning 5 groups can be distinguished: Physical sex, with masculine bias; sex as an expression of love and sexual education messages, both with feminine bias; maturity and associated academic topics, as well as gender difference, both without gender bias. Female sexual behavior is more inhibited. It is concluded that the strongest differences appear in behavior, being congruent with the differences in attitudes and meanings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
