Abstract

The article reports that increasing numbers of firms in the U.S. are acting to compensate employees for unprofitable stock options they hold. Approaches include exchanging the options for cash, and issuing new options with a better potential to become profitable. Firms say their actions boost employee morale, although some shareholders object that nobody makes good their losses when stocks decline.
