Abstract

The definition of a town's identity is a contemporary problematic. The process of economic globalization, far from devastating with the regional or national particularities seems to have exacerbated them. For that reason, to look for the bases of the national or regional identity in the present forces to dig in our own history to try to find out the real or mythical origins of the same. But the identity is not an easy or univocal concept or of an immediate apprehension. It was not in the past nor in the present. For that reason, this article aims to introduce the problematic of identity from the theory of the social representations and as case applied to the City of Mendoza, Argentina.
