Abstract

In Mexico, cyst-forming nematodes (CFN) are represented by various species, being the most important: Globodera rostochiensis (Golden Nematode) on potato and other Solanaceae plants. Other Globodera species present are: G. tabacum, G. solanacearum, G. virgin iae, G. mexicana, and G. bravoae. Punctodera chalcoensis (Corn Cyst Nematode) is widely spread on the central high plateau and in other maize-producing regions. Heterodera sp. and Heterodera schachtii are found on sugarbeet in lztapalapa, D. F. and in Chalco, State of Mexico; H. humuli and H. salixophila are found on Micranihia spp.; H. cyperi is present on Cyperus spp. in the states of Tlaxcala and Nayarit. Cactodera cacti is associated to Cactaceae in several states; C. amaranthi is present on spinach, and other Chenopodiaceae and Amaranthaceae on the central plateau; C. sauna is found on Salichornia bigelovii (Chenopodiaceae) in Sonora state; C. evansi is a parasite of carnation in Villa Guerrero, State of Mexico; C. galinsogae has been described in barley and other weeds of the high valleys of the state of Hidalgo. The presence of these CFN species is important from the phytosanitary and quarantine points of view, as cysts may be transported along with plant products which migh not be their hosts.
