Abstract

Inheritance conferring resistance to partial bunt (Tillena indica) was studied in two doubled-haploid populations of wheat. These populations were produced by the wheat wide crossing program in CIMMYT, Mexico, using maize pollination and rescue of proembryos. The synthetic hexaploid Ruff/T. iauschii was used as a resistant parent and cultivars Opata M-85 and Ciano T-79 as susceptible ones. The first population consisted of 146 lines and the second 104; each population was planted and artificially inoculated in the field during two crop cycles. There were two planting dates in 2003-2004 and three in 2004-2005. Parents and the susceptible check WL-711 were included in each trial. Infection levels of karnal bunt were highly significantly different among the doubled-haploids, and at least four showed no infection across planting dates and years. Cultivar Opata M-85 was more resistant to karnal bunt than cv. Ciano T-79. Segregation of doubled-haploids into resistant and susceptible in population one indicated the presence of at least two genes for resistance, whereas population two indicated three to five.
