Abstract

The article features art collector Michael Hamson and his interest in Papua New Guinea's tribal art. His interest on the country's tribal art began in 1993 when he attended a Santa Monica art fair during a break from his job as a merchant seaman on an oil tanker. His first trip to the country was in 1995. Hamson has purchased a Lumi bowl which was carved from a single piece of wood with bone or stone tools. It notes that since 1995, Hamson has committed the country's tribal art. He has trained a squad of scouts who seek objects on his behalf.
