Abstract

The article discusses research on the high-throughput sequencing of entire genomes to identify the mutations that sustain specific phenotypes. In the observed study, this approach is used to genetically characterize the enhanced fermentative capacity of a Pichia stipitis mutant. The availability of usable wild-type reference sequences is integral to the use of whole-genome sequencing to map mutations. The author also addresses the need for researchers to develop workflows that exploit the increased throughput of short-read platforms, as sample preparation has become a bottleneck in data generation.
