Abstract

Many hot spots around the globe had just a brief time in the sun -- a moment when they were the it destination for celebrities and the wealthy of their era. For Jamaica, that golden age was the 1950s and early '60s, when the island was slotted into the jet-set itinerary after Florida and before Barbados. The island's spotlight brightened and dimmed in concert with the birth of international celebrity and the vagaries of international politics, but it was lighted in World War II, when Jamaica was a British colony and an Allied base, and its strategic importance led to increased aid and infrastructure development.
