Abstract

The article examines the role of the Hunanese in the development of modern China. Particular attention is given to reform and revolution in Hunan, China. The article focuses on what three generations of Hunanese did to put the Hunan province in the national spotlight. The Hunanese were at the forefront of political activity in China from the 1850s to the 1980s. According to the author they were patriotic. The author examines whether the Communist Revolution would have been so violent had liberals or those with no military experience been in control.
