Abstract

Mortality is a key demographic force that requires studies on morbidity and burden of disease in order to outline the overall epidemiologic profile of a nation. The results of this paper show the variations in mortality that have taken place in Colombia during the past hundred years. Thus, the mortality processes could be easily connected to the rest of the demographic set of the country. Some of the findings follow the patterns of the traditional epidemiologic transition model, others differ from that archetype but are common to most developing countries, and some of them are distinctive of Colombia.
