Abstract

This article analyzes the volume of poetry Jardín cerrado (1946), by the Spanish exile Emilio Prados, as a reelaboration of the motif of the pre-modern hortus conclusus. Reading the book through the current critical trend that emphasizes the role of the bodily senses in cultural history (particularly smell and hearing), it shows that this book condemns what happens when the relationship between man and nature is mediated solely by the sense of sight (as privileged by modernity) and the orientation in space proposed by modern geometry and geography. In a secondary way, this reading allows us to question the view of exile that Jardín cerrado offers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
