Abstract

The article offers information on some of the challenges encountered by the global mining industry. One of the challenges include delivering adequate volumes of metals and minerals at prices that will not fuel inflation and will result in profits into local and national host economies. During the last few years, the industry has been going through a consolidation phase. The supply response has been slow due to the long-term exploration and mining investment. Due to consolidation, a small number of companies control an increasing share of the industry, which has both positive and negative effects. The industry is stated to become more and more polarized due to mergers and acquisition (M&A) activity.
