Abstract: The article focuses on contribution of Yoshikazu Sasaki to the development of variational method of data assimilation. It highlights Sasaki's training in physics and the application of calculus of variations to relativity and quantum mechanics. Moreover, the author argues on fundamental difference of variational methods introduced by Sasaki as well as the meteorological community introduced by Arnt Eliassen to the stochastic approach to data assimilation. Furthermore, a study on the link between tropical cyclones and fronts is also discussed.
