Abstract
- An essay is presented which explores poet W. H. Auden's portrayal of war in his literary works. The author asserts that Auden had a belief that real emotion could only be obtained in literary efforts if the author had first-hand knowledge of his subject. To that end, Auden traveled throughout the world in the 1930s so he could gain a journalistic understanding of the world. His itinerary included visiting Spain during the Civil War and going to China to observe the Sino-Japanese War.
