Abstract

The article offers information on the past Martian Dynamo. Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) have revealed magnetic anomalies in the south of the crustal dichotomy. If the dynamo of Mars is similar to that of Earth, its magnetic dichotomy entails that the magnetization of the northern hemisphere was erased and the dynamo stopped operating very early in its history. Stanley and his colleagues proposed an alternative model in which a hemisphere-scale heat flux pattern forced the dynamo at the core-mantle boundary. In this new assumption, the much weaker crustal magnetization in the northern hemisphere is not a result of a post-dynamo process such as a giant impact but rather, it was never magnetized originally.
